| Me at the 2005 Google Dance Party |
About the year 2000, a client approached me with a five page website about a small beach front vacation rental he owned. He said he wanted it listed in the #1 spot in all the major search engines for the term “Kauai Vacation Rentalsâ€. I told him to basically forget about it.
I said, “There is no way that’s ever going to happen. Look who you’re competing against. You only have one single property. You only have a small website. You could buy sponsored listings but you don’t have any money. Your single property will never generate enough revenue to support the ads.”
Then he said “No… you don’t understand, look at this.” He then typed “Kauai Vacation Rentals” into Google and the #1 organic listing was the lady who lived down the street from him and her three page website promoting her single beach front rental property. He said, “Her house is almost the same as mine! She’s not rich! My website even looks better than hers! How is she doing that?”
I was speechless… I had no idea how such a small and amateurish website could be out ranking the major hotel, timeshare and real estate websites. After I saw that, I became obsessed with search engine optimization, marketing and online advertising.
And I’m still obsessed. Every day I research, implement and test the latest techniques and developments. I travel regularly to the mainland to attend several major online advertising seminars and conferences. I’m very active in the online advertising community and have made close friends and key industry contacts in a wide verity of key niche specialties.
I’m not accepting any new clients at this time but please feel free to contact me anyway.
Aloha,
Dave.
